I've got the basic stuff up and running, so the blog is moving. The new url is http://yomcat.geek.nz/blog.All commenting will be disabled here, and I will endeavour to get the RSS feed(s) to point to the new one, but it'll be easier if you just change your feed reader.

For various reasons, this blog has become annoying. I will be closing it soon.I'll put a link to the new one once it's ready. It might take some time. Almost nothing will be transferred, because that's too much work and I'm lazy.

Prepare to have your mind blown. And this post would be much easier if I could put LaTeX in. (More)02 Aug, 2010

So I'm going to Canberra later in this year. On a desert bus, and a plane, for some maths. (More)20 Jul, 2010
At any given time, I have a finite number of questions bouncing around in my head. Here is a sample (excluding all the ones related to my thesis, and they'll make no sense to the two of you that read this). Some are serious, some are silly. Some are both. Some are only semi-decidable. (More)01 Jul, 2010
I wants this shirt. The screen shot isn't very good because it's from a protected video (DRM is annoying). (More)30 Jun, 2010
So, two days without football. Then two days of football. Then I'll move back to NZ time. Something like that. (More)26 Jun, 2010
I haven't seen all the games (due to clashes) and I won't. So this is not an exhaustive summary. The five games I haven't seen are Germany v Ghana, Slovakia v Italy, Cameroon v Netherlands, Korea DPR v Côte d'Ivorie, and Switzerland v Honduras. (More)24 Jun, 2010
Well, I do need something to do in these long mornings between games. Anyway, the rules are players must be a the final squads, and only one player from each country. There were some hard decisions in there. If somebody wants me to make them a pretty graphic like the one below, I'm free most mornings. (More)

And now (well, just after 8 this "morning") round 2 has been completed as well. North Korea and Cameroon are going home, while Brazil and Holland are through to the Round of 16. (More)21 Jun, 2010
So, we just drew with Italy. The reigning world champions. FIFA call it the biggest upset so far. BBC call it one of the biggest shocks in recent World Cup memory. (More)17 Jun, 2010
The first round of 16 matches has just been completed. And what a way to end it. Messiest goal so far, but Switzerland are going to party long and hard... (More)09 Jun, 2010
In case you don't know yet, I am intending to watch the entire World Cup. Almost. I might miss some bits because I have to play with kiddies. And there are eight games that clash (the final group ones). But I'll watch the rest of it. If you want a little preview, check out this goal by David Silva. (More)30 May, 2010
In rugby terms, this would be like Serbia (yes, really) beating the All Blacks. Yeah...

WHERE ye have heretofore been excited and stirred to use temperance of meats and drinks, and to avoid the excess thereof, many ways hurtful to the state of the commonwealth, and also odious before Almighty God, being the Author and Giver of such creatures, to comfort and stablish our frail nature with thanks unto him, and not by abusing of them to provoke his liberality to severe punishing of that disorder; in like manner it is convenient that ye be admonished of another foul and chargeable excess, I mean of apparel, at these days so outrageous, that neither Almighty God by his word can stay our proud curiosity in the same, neither yet godly and necessary laws, made of our Princes and oft repeated with the penalties, can bridle this detestable abuse; whereby both God is openly contemned, and the Prince’s laws manifestly disobeyed, to the great peril of the realm. Wherefore, that sobriety also in this excess may be espied among us, I shall declare unto you both the moderate use of apparel approved by God in his holy word, and also the abuses thereof, which he forbiddeth and disalloweth, as it may appear by the inconveniences which daily encrease by the just judgment of God where that measure is not kept which he himself hath appointed. ABOUT ME
I'm Michael Welsh (or yomcat), a 23 year old something from Wellington, New Zealand. I was married on the 23rd of February 2008 to Melissa. I enjoy discrete mathematics mainly, and have a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics. I have an iMac, called Gordon (named after my grandfather), and my "something small for Uni", known as Zepto. Oh, and Steve. Currently, I am doing my Masters, in the area of Matroids. I have a rather large (entire wall) blackboard in my room (3.24m2), and a little (A4) one that lives in my bag. I like long walks in the forest, playing computer games and stat whoring.
